The sitter, strictly speaking Gustavo Adolfo as the artist was Felice Adolfo, was born on 6 March 1861 and died on 16 November 1903, the fifth child of Alois and Genovefa Müller-Lombardi. He was a hotelier in Andermatt. He had two sons, his oldest son, a lawyer, died in the 1920s.
